Inspired by collections visit at New-York Historical Society during an artist residency where Beatrice Glow got to see 19th-20th century paper peepshow books, an early form of virtual reality where an accordion-like book unfolds into a sculptural artist book to reveal a world within, rice Glow created her own version that depicts an alternative commemoration of the 400 year anniversary of the founding of the Dutch colony of New Amsterdam (present-day New York).
This artist book is the result of multi-year dialogues and collaborations with nine local and global culture bearers whose heritages were impacted by Dutch colonialism (see more here). Following many listening sessions, Glow used virtual reality sculpting to create 3D models of parade float maquettes that reflect the cultural perspectives of the culture bearers. These 3D models of the parade float maquettes were then 3D printed into physical sculptures as well as turned into a virtual paper peepshow in a video filmed in a virtual environment.
